Serpent

Serpent is a sculpture that takes on the forms of a garden snake and an incense coil from my memories of staying in different artists residencies both in Toronto and Malaysia. From the gardens of Toronto Islands (Gibraltar Point) to the rainforest of Rimbun Dahan, the creatures and plants have influenced the materials in this sculpture. The use vegetation and flora from tropical to temperate climates, narrate the stories of hardship and resilience within the diaspora.  

 Made from ash wood and palmwood, the structure is made using dowel joints, letting the wood behave in ways that are unorthodox. In the crevices, there are incense both in its curated and raw forms showcasing the variation.
